The Blue Eye is a natural spring where the clear blue water of the river bubbles forth. Divers have descended to 50 meters, but it is still unclear what the actual depth of the karst hole is.

In 1537 Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent attacked Corfu. In order to control the harbor of Sarande and the connecting road to Butrint, he built Lekursi Castle on the highest point.

The Greco-Roman site of Butrint fell into decline during the Middle Ages but this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Albania.

Gjirokastra is known as “The City of Stone”and has over 500 historic buildings, which grew up under the steep slopes of the castle, in order to save valuable agricultural land.
